Seattle, WA day 2

Seattle WA
(I'm trying to catch up on some of my posts, forgive me!!)

Andaluca Restaurant (in Mayflower Park Hotel)
I love NY deli, Pike Place Market
Noodles, Mall

Breakfast was at the most convenient place this morning, at the hotel restaurant. Very nice ambiance, carved wood booths, quiet place. I ordered a mushroom omelet with roasted potatoes. WOW! When I say mushroom omelet, it was loaded with very flavorful mushrooms. The potatoes were cooked PERFECTLY, nice and crispy outside, soft inside. A little sour cream would have made it perfect, but unfortunately they did not have any. The prices for the food were reasonable but my breakfast partner ordered a glass of orange juice for $4.75!!!!

We are extremely lucky to have our office near the famed Pike’s Place Market, right on the water. They are famous for their fresh fish market where the employees toss the fish to each other with some chanting and entertainment. We wandered around a little during our lunch break before deciding we needed to find something to eat. We found a little deli place and I ordered a heaping pastrami sandwich on homemade marble rye bread with mustard, swiss cheese and a pickle and potato salad on the side. As she was making our sandwiches in her little 10x10 booth, I look at the sign. It was called ‘I Love NY Deli’. Oh my god, what were we thinking? We travel across the country (my partner is from Baltimore, MD) to Seattle and the first lunch we have is from a NY Style Deli??!?!? Not too smart. But the food was very good! I would have liked the bread to have been toasted but otherwise it was perfect.

I also got some freshly made caramel cashews and a baggie of mixed veggie chips from the market too. The veggie mix even has green beans!

After doing the typical sightseeing during our first night in the city (Seattle Space Needle is pretty cool!), we decided to grab a quick dinner at the mall that is right next to our hotel. I chose a made-to-order noodle dish called Singapore Noodles from a place called Noodles (picture above). It had really big noodles and everything else but the kitchen sink. Chicken, tofu, bean sprouts, carrots and more. Very flavorful and, towards the end, very spicy! It slowly built up in the spiciness until, when the mall security guard told us they were closing and we had to leave, at EIGHT O’CLOCK, it was so spicy I couldn’t eat anymore.

Seattle certainly isn’t NYC!

O’Charley’s restaurant, Nashville TN Airport

In between two very entertaining SouthWest airline trips, I found myself with about an hour and a half layover in Nashville, TN at dinner time. Since they do not believe in feeding you on the airplane anymore (other than rolling packages of peanuts for all the passengers down the aisle as we are taking off….I told you the trips were entertaining!), I knew I had to fend for myself rather than wait to eat at 9PM Seattle time (or 12 midnight MY time!). And the oh-so-lovely fish sandwich I threw down my gullet at lunch time needed to move on.

I decided I wanted to do a nice sit-down restaurant with a good sandwich menu after drooling over a recipe in the ‘O’ (as in Oprah) magazine I was reading that someone thoughtfully left for me at the Bradley Airport. I was quite pleasantly surprised at the prices on the posted menu in the door of O’Charley’s for an airport restaurant and at the limited offerings (usually a sign of a restaurant that specializes in a few good meals). So in I went.

I decided even before I sat down that I wanted the roast beef sandwich (piled high) on ciabatta bread with zesty Cajun horseradish sauce, swiss cheese and onion rings. A nice multi flavored sandwich, hopefully with lots of textures and flavors. And I requested a side of onions rings in place of the standard French fries for a small fee.

I heard the waitress mention to the table of 3 women next to me that it was getting busy now and that their food would take a little longer to come out. I started to fret since I didn’t have too much time to waste before my next flight, but I had no worries.

I almost always order an ice water with lemon at every restaurant I go to and you would be surprised how many screw that up. This restaurant gave me a large glass of ice water (nice!) with a skewered slice of lemon on the side (again, nice!). Then I was brought 2 warm rolls with a dollop of butter. They smelled and looked better than they tasted, warm and yeasty, shiny on top. Some of the better rolls I have had at restaurants but not a lot of flavor.

My meal looked nice. I really liked the horseradish sauce but they just drizzled it on top. I requested more (I am a condiment queen!). It was a nice sized sandwich, good amount of beef, 2 measly onion rings on top (I much prefer ‘onion straws’ used at other places) and some au jus on the side. I tried some but I’m just not into soggy bread. The extra Cajun horseradish really helped kick up the sandwich. The bread was good and it might have been served warm (I cannot actually remember) but it could have been slightly toasted or warmer.

The onions rings were nice and crispy but flavorless. I drowned a few of them in salt and ketchup and left the rest behind.

I would have given this restaurant a pretty good rating until I decided that I should try something sweet. Since I had no room for dessert, I decided to order some of their specialty Smoothies. All 3 had the same basic ingredients: ice cream mix, ice and the main ingredient (chocolate syrup, strawberry puree or oreo cookie bits). Ice cream MIX??!?! What is that? I was hoping it was some sort of code but I think it truly was a mix. It tasted bland, like chalk, gritty, barely registered as sweet. And I threw out three-quarters of it. Yes, ME! Who hates to waste food, who usually cleans her plate, threw out the drink because it was that bad. What a disappointment.

I went on line and found out that they supposedly feed kids for free. I didn’t see that advertised anywhere but if it is true, that would make the FOOD a truly good deal: decent food at a decent price, especially for an airport. My main dish was only $8.95, garbage-drink $3.95 and $0.69 for the onion ring transfer. And I had a nice relaxed dinner and was in and out in 40 minutes. I would recommend this place but don’t drink their smoothies!

Burger King, Windsor Locks, CT

Desparate to have some real food before I catch a plane and having only eaten 2 munchkins and some really REALLY good chocolate truffles for breakfast (?), I did the Burger King drive-thru. I really don't like fast food much at all and it was a hard choice to get something I could tolerate.

I decided a BK Big Fish would make me think I'm being partially healthy (it is fish, after all!!!). That's it, just the sandwich. I always think the employees are being so insultive when you only ask for a sanwich ("JUST the sandwich?!?!" they asked condescendingly.)

Ewwwiee. I really really wish I had had time to get something better to eat. That's all I've got to say.

Jason's Seafood, Enfield, CT

My sister had heard about this restaurant and wanted to try it. So she and I went this past Saturday night. Unfortunately, I think I was coming down with a cold but I still joined her.

The restaurant has a weird set-up, apparently 2 restaurants share one space. When you walk in, you walk towards a very small bar and the seafood restaurant is on the right and a Japanese restaurant is on the left. Both looked almost full.

Apparently, one hostess was taking care of both restaurants but not being very good at letting us know that. Even though I stood near the seafood restaurant hostess stand for several minutes, she never gave me any attention. Only after I heard her talk to a couple about the seafood restaurant at the Japanese restaurant hostess stand, did I walk over to her and ask if she was also taking care of the seafood restaurant. She said sure, she would be right there to help me. Once I did get her attention, I was directed right to a table.

The setting is a little strange, my seat was near the busy entrance with half walls between the tables and the entrance. The ambiance gets a low mark. There weren't any 'good seats' anywhere in the seafood side.

But the food............yummy! Both of us opted for the Lobster Bisque as an appetizer and it was great. A big bowl of very flavorful soup, big chunks of lobster, perfect eating temperature.

The side salad was just okay. Mostly iceberg lettuce, a couple of grape tomatoes, the blue cheese dressing was okay.

My sister opted for one of her favorites with a twist, which she loves even more: Lobster Raviolis with Spinach. 6 raviolis were served with sauteed spinach and a cream sauce. She enjoyed it but i thought the serving size should have been a little more generous for the price.

I ordered a Seafood Casserole which was awesome. Unfortunately, after the very filling lobster bisque, salad and one roll (a nice warm, whole grain, flavorful roll) and an oncoming cold, I was only able to eat a little at that time. But it was a generous portion of shrimps, scallops and big pieces of lobster over a crabmeat stuffing with nice crisp green beans and a baked potato. But my leftovers heated very well and still was very tasty!

Side note: They had a small lobster tank near the entrance where, apparently, you can pick your own fresh lobster if desired.

Final rating (out of 5)
Restaurant(appearance, ambiance): 3
Service(hostess, waitress): 4
Food: 4.5 (almost perfect)

Would I go back again? Yes! But don't plan on going to this place for a romantic dinner, just for good food!

Chili's Restaurant, Glastonbury, CT

Ok, I know Chili's is a chain but I like their food. I often go there when I want something quick and good. And I (along with other friends and family) sometimes go there and make a meal out of their appetizers.

So, Roger came home with some gift certificates for Chili's and we went out Halloween night (after the dozen trick-or-treaters came by). It was not busy that night and we got a table right away. Service was very good that night.

We started with drinks, Roger said 'you pick the margarita' to the waiter for him and I selected a Caribean Calypso drink (with rum). We both enjoyed our drinks, Chili's is known for their varied and specialty margaritas. The waiter brought Roger a 'Platinum Margarita' which he enjoyed. My drink was nice and fruity and fresh.

We had a specialty appetizer, Zesty Cheese nachos with gaucamole. Enjoyable! Crispy chips circled the plate, completely covered in melted cheese and a slice of jalapeno pepper on each. Tomatoes, sour cream, lettuce and gaucamole were included for spreading on the chips.

Roger ordered a FAJITA TRIO - "Tender grilled steak, marinated grilled chicken and spicy garlic & lime grilled shrimp. Served with onions & bell peppers." I grabbed a shrimp from his plate and it was very tasty. He enjoyed his meal very much.

I order a special - Crispy chicken tacos. I got three tacos loaded with crispy chicken strips, lettuce and ranch dressing. The tacos are actually their tortillas crisped up-nice!

We both ordered black beans and rice on the side - both were a little bland, could use a little more 'pow'.

My leftovers heated nicely for lunch the next day.

Final rating (out of 5)
Restaurant(appearance, ambiance): 3 (Nothing fancy)
Service(hostess, waitress): 5 (Couldn't ask for better service and attention)
Food: 4

Would I go back again? Yes, I have again and again and will again.

Garlic John's Restaurant, Manchester Center, VT

Here's my first posting of a restaurant review. I've been wanting to do this for a long time and finally am making myself do it.

We decided to take Route 30 home from upstate NY on a Sunday evening, mid-October. I had remembered passing a 'Garlic' something restaurant so we kept our eyes open for it this time. We got there about 7PM and it wasn't busy. There are about 30 tables in the whole restaurant and about 7 were occupied.

When we walked in the front door, we were in a small lobby with the restaurant to the left and a small, quiet bar to the right. It was decorated with a lot of cianti bottles hanging from the ceiling and several bold paintings lit individually on the walls. The walls were treated to look like old-fashing stucco and there was a wall of windows (although, we couldn't see much at that time of night in the fall). It was a nice hushed ambiance that evening that made it very pleasant, candles on the table, very nice.

I actually was upset almost immediately because, even though it wasn't busy, we stood by the hostess station for several minutes before anyone even came to check on us. Then, one of the waitresses did come out to the hostess station, looked at us, and almost walked away. Then, she came to her senses, turned back and asked if we needed any help. We said 'yes, we'd like a table', then she went into gear. That gave me a bad feeling but that was the last bad feeling of the evening. Everything afterwards caused me to improve my feelings about this restaurant.

We were served some great bread, warm (bread should ALWAYS be served warm) and crusty with a nice tasty, soft inside. Perfect. There was olive oil on the table and when we asked if they had roasted garlic, they offered to sautee up some garlic for us, which they did at no extra charge. We also asked for extra bread later in the meal and it was brought out, at no extra charge. Good job!

We ordered an appetizer of Calamari. It had a weird coating on it, an unflavored cornmeal. It was cooked well and the accompaniments saved it. One was a very flavorful marinara sauce (which we kept to dunk the great bread in too) and a garlic mayonnaise which we also enjoyed.

The side salad that was included with the entrees was romaine lettuce and little bit of red lettuce, and carrots. We both opted for the house gorgonzola dressing but it disappointed. It was very bland, almost like eating sour cream on our salad.

Both of us ordered a different type of Colossal Raviolis. Roger's were from the menu: Colossal raviolis florentine, advertised as raviolis stuffed with spinach with a gorgonzolla sauce. Actually, the raviolis were stuffed with a cheese and light amount of spinach mixture over a bed of very tasty sauteed spinach, with a cream sauce. Roger enjoyed it.

I ordered a special for the night, advertised as raviolis stuffed with gorgonzolla and onions, topped with caramelized onions and a sage cream sauce. My raviolis were the same as Roger's, with a cheese sauce and dots of green (spinach?) and SMOTHERED in caramelized onions and a cream sauce. I love caramelized onions so I thoroughly enjoyed this.

We both saved half of our entrees for lunch the next day and to have room for some dessert. When I reheated mine, it was swimming in olive oil but I still enjoyed it.

Roger would have liked to have a cappuccino but was told the steamer was broken, so his choices were espresso or coffee. He says the coffee was good.

We wanted to try their key lime moussecake but it wasn't available. So we decided on the Raspberry Square. Good choice! It was a warm square of raspberry crisp, topped with vanilla ice cream, a side of WONDERFUL whipped cream, drizzled with raspberry sauce and a large sliced fresh strawberry. The whipped cream had a nice taste and we asked if it was flavored, and the waitress said it was just really fresh and vanilla-y.

The bathroom was clean and stocked.

Final rating (out of 5)
Restaurant(appearance, ambiance): 4
Service(hostess, waitress): 4
Food: 3 (half good, half not good)

Would I go back again? I wouldn't go out of my way to avoid this restaurant but I'll try another one first before coming back.
